The hoard was thought to have belonged to the Anglo-Saxon elite –aristocracy or royalty -due to its intricate design and metalwork. Many of the gold and silver items looked as though they had been torn from other objects, such as fittings from helmets or sword belts, indicating that they were possibly trophies from war or even the spoils from a long military career, but whatever the case, the nature of the objects became apparent that their origin was more than likely a bloody and violent one.
